October 1985 saw a limited North American release of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the USA and with it, Mario. Japan got the system in 1983 as the Famicom system. Mario sold 10m copies by the end of 1985 and has since sold more than 100 million copies.
Mario continues to live on today through the DS handheld console and will soon be on the Nintendo Wii.
